ED2

Parents, we are over halfway through the 9-weeks.  Here are some things you can do to help your high school student stay on track to earn credit in all classes.

Ask your student to show you their grades on PowerSchool.

Ask your student to show you their classes on Canvas.  Canvas can be a great resource with real time assignments and current class topics.

If you have questions about a class, email the teacher by clicking the teacher's name on PowerSchool.

If your student is not passing, here is a list of things you can do to help your student:

·         Check Canvas daily to see:

o   Daily assignments and their due dates

§  If the due date is not clear, contact the teacher in advance for clarification.

o   Observe ancillary materials on the page (if applicable) such as:

§  Directions

·         If the directions are unclear, email the teacher stating precisely what is unclear in advance of the due date. This will allow for a proper response in a timely fashion to clear up confusion that would not allow for successful completion.

§  Examples

·         Refer to and use the examples to provide a framework for correct completion of the remainder of the assignment not completed in class.

§  Rubrics or scoresheets (if applicable)

·         Use the rubric to ensure that the assignment has been completed thoroughly and completely.

o   Upcoming quizzes or tests

§  Help prepare the student by

·         Use of flashcards for rote memory practice

o   Stems

o   DLP skills

o   Biology terms

o   Math formulas

o   Etc.

§  This should be completed incrementally throughout the week dedicating time to portion off the concepts or terms allowing time for repetition and addition of new material nightly.

o   Reading the material aloud to ensure comprehension

o   Practice math and science problems to the point that your student can complete every type of problem correctly on their own.

o   Send an email nightly to each teacher stating that you have checked Canvas and reviewed the material being covered in each course and PowerSchool for the student’s current grade.

§  This should include the assignment’s name and due date.

·         Any questions (see above)

§  A Summary of the type of preparation for the upcoming quiz or test that has been performed at home. (see above)

§  Include a report on the progress at home of checked assignments for completion and accuracy.

§  Check PowerSchool nightly and include the grade.

To promote a positive learning experience for the student and the parents, we believe that communication, access to information, and providing a holistic approach that supports the student at home as well as at school is essential. The list provides a starting point for parents to be able to effectively communicate with their son/daughter while at home and a platform to communicate efficiently with the faculty.
